Aunty Marlene and Deanne Gilson's family inspired pieces have been selected to be displayed at the Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Melbourne Museum until the end of June.
Their Wadawurrung Past, Present and Future exhibition of paintings and ceramic works explores colonial settlement through a Wadawurrung perspective.
Exploring colonial records of the Ballarat goldfields and settlement in Melbourne, Deanne said with her mother they worked to visually depict stories passed down them.
"My mother's ancestors were from Ballarat. She has looked at their stories and family history, depicting images of our past history along with stories of creation and our totems Bunujil the eagle and Waa the crow," she said.
"Because our ancestors were from Ballarat she has based it around the goldfields.
"My journey is more contemporary, I've looked at Wadawurrung Dreaming as language.
"I've added modern symbols to our traditional symbols."

Other members of the family have also contributed pieces of their work to represent the future of Wadawurrung.
"We're all completely different," Deanne said.
"It's like a timeline, and you're taken on a journey."
