The 2017 one-day World Cup semi-final in Derby, where Kaur's unbeaten 171 powered India to an upset victory over Australia, proved a turning point for both sides.
For Meg Lanning's team there was no shortage of introspection and a recognition the chasing pack had caught up.
India's governing body announced a bonus of $A98,000 per player amid waves of euphoria, significant pay rises and an agreement to stage an all-star women's Twenty20 exhibition match alongside the men's IPL the following year.
In the sport's most powerful and populous nation, where the men's side has long been worshiped but women's central contracts were only introduced in 2015, they were significant developments.
The introduction of a women's IPL is widely viewed as the next major step for the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI), whose current five-year broadcast deal for the men's IPL is worth a staggering $A3.2 billion.
Victory in the T20 World Cup final on March 8 would serve as a career highlight for Kaur but India's captain knows there is a bigger picture at play as her BCCI bosses follow the tournament with interest.
"Our officials are already working on it (a women's IPL)," Kaur told AAP.
"This year hopefully we will get more (all-star exhibition T20) games and then after two years we will have a good setup like the WBBL in Australia.
"They are positive about that. They are taking women's IPL forward.
"I think that is a great idea ... it is good they are taking steps ahead."
Kaur added if India win their first T20 World Cup then "things are going to change, no doubt about it".
"We have seen those changes in the WBBL - the players are doing really well, getting confidence from that tournament," she said.
"If we get a women's IPL that will be really good for us."
Kaur became the first India player - male or female - to join an overseas T20 league when she joined Sydney Thunder in 2016.
The 30-year-old, whose childhood spent idolising Virender Sehwag is arguably reflected in the freedom in which she can score, returns to western Sydney for the T20 World Cup opener between Australia and India on Friday.
